|
Happiest
memory: The happiest memory of WPHS was when
I was called out of English class my senior year to learn
that I had been accepted at Sewanee. Other than a specific
moment, there was the "ambience" of being a
student at my home town's high school-the same school
from which my parents, brother, cousins, etc., graduated-with
an especially congenial group of fellow students, with
many of whom I had shared a classroom since first grade.
Funniest/weirdest coincidence:
Changing diapers at age 48!
Children: Justin, 19, Robert,
2
Spouse: Carrie Ashton
Present work and/or activities:
Work includes managing 60,000 acres of forest and mineral
assets, reclamation activities, real estate sales, and
general land management duties
Bio: Despite a disastrous freshman
year, I graduated from Sewanee in 1966 with a BA. A master's
from the University of Florida followed in 1969, after
which I left the sunny, warm south to become Technical
Director for a forest management consulting firm in Milwaukee,
WI. Much to my surprise, I loved Milwaukee, but left in
1975 to take a job allowing me to live in Sewanee, TN,
my old college town. I'm still here, and continue as Land
Manager and Forester for Tennessee Consolidated Coal Company.
Work, conservation, and professional associations and
an infant boy (ESPECIALLY the baby boy) take up most of
my time these days, but occasionally I travel, and have
taken up flying as both a hotty and as part of my work.
Married in 1968, and again in 1984 (divorced in between!)
to Carrie Ashton, who is Outgoing Club Director here at
the college.
Future plans and goals: Consulting/Real
estate when our coal reserves are depleted-about five
years. |

| DID
YOU
KNOW?
(as
of 2006)
Husband:
Tracy
Children:
Todd & Laura; 1 granddaughter
Present work and/or activities: I currently
work in home health.
Bio: After high school, I attended Salem
College (a women's college in Winston-Salem, N.C.),
Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and graduated
in 1965 from the University of Florida. I earned a B.S.
degree in Nursing. I was a member of Alpha Delta Pi
sorority at SMU and the University of Florida (along
with Pat Stephenson and Susan Chase from our WPHS class).
I was honored to be Sweetheart of Kappa Sigma fraternity
at Sewanee: The University of the South. After college
graduation, I obtained a job as a nurse at Grady Memorial
Hospital in Atlanta. Grady Hospital was a large, inner-city
hospital/trauma center and teaching hospital for Emory
University School of Medicine. I loved my job--and loved
Atlanta--a stunningly beautiful city! I came back to
Winter Park, got a job, and in 1969 met and married
my husband, Tracy. We have lived in several cities in
the Southeast, including tiny St. Cloud, the community
near Kissimmee. We have two children. Our married son
Todd (no grandchildren yet) works as an Assets Allocation
Analyst in the financial industry. Our daughter , Laura,
formerly a student, is married to a PhD candidate at
the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. Her husband
aspires to be a pharmaceutical research scientist. His
research work to complete the doctoral dissertation
involves Alzheimer's disease. They have one toddler,
a little daughter who is 1 1/2 years old, and expect
a second child in late spring.
Future plans and goals: I hope to be able
to retire some day---and learn quilting. Additionally,
I would like to get back to oil painting which I so
enjoyed years ago. And----I would like to raise roses! |
| I
believe that those of us who were privileged to spend
our formative years growing up in Winter Park were blessed
indeed. The decade of the 1950's and early 1960's, our
coming of age years, were spent in an idyllic small town
which had a wonderful ambiance--beautiful lakes, lovely
homes, a charming downtown---Park Avenue. Additionally,
we had terrific schools, with exemplary teachers. Click
