My First WPHS Class Reunion, the 45th 1961 to 2006

We were all so innocent then…so naive and vulnerable. We were being groomed for a life, a destiny that we had no idea would catapult us into the 21st Century with its ups and downs, its gifts and challenges, both personally, socially, culturally and economically. Winter Park High School 1959 to 1961 the Reunion of the Century begins.

We met and it was sweet. I have not seen any of these people except for “Stevie” for 45 years and that was only last summer. I have been apprehensive. Because in my mind…they are all young, thin, vibrant and full of zest for life. I mean, all of us are only 17 in my mind. And yet when I look in the mirror…I have wrinkles. It is not whether or not they will like me…it is will they like me with wrinkles?

I had mentioned my anxieties to “Stevie” earlier on the phone this morning, calling her to ask for a copy of the taped interview we did for the reunion DVD. She said that there would be 40 classmates at the Mt Vernon Inn where we were staying. “Just go out by the poolside restaurant and ask who’s here for the reunion and you will meet them.”

“I feel funny seeing them because everyone is still young in my mind.”

Below is an excerpt from e-mail dated 10/26/2006 written by "Stevie" Wilberding:

Suzanne's room at the Mt. Vernon Inn was close to mine. She had arrived the day before and decided to make a poodle skirt for the Saturday sock hop. So she went out and bought the felt, the satin poodles, ribbon and a sewing a machine! (which she carried as hand luggage back to Sedona....) That was Suzanne. The least conventional solution seemed so natural to her. We had so many giggles. She bought me a satin poodle, too, and was prepared to sew me a skirt. Such a dear heart. I would love to find that great picture of Suzanne in her homemade poodle costume. She looked wonderful and was rewarded with praise all evening.

Suzanne loved the reunion and went home to write about 40 pages describing it. That was a girl who would write a book at the drop of a hat! Suzanne found renewed companionship and such wonderful warmth at our reunion. It left a deep impression on her life... tying bows on several issues. In retrospect you can understand that she found exquisite closure on her early life at the end of her life.

Bless our darling friend who followed her star and returned to say good bye. We give thanks for her life.
