Herbert Nelson Challis, Jr.

CHALLIS, HERBERT N., JR. was born September 29, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. He lived in the Detroit area until eight years old then moved with family to Winter Park, Florida.

Following high school, Herb attended Massey Technical Institute in Jacksonville studying industrial electronics where he obtained a FCC First Class Radio Telephone License with Radar Endorsement. That was followed by an Associates in Science Degree from Florida Technical University.

In 1964, Herb began work for G.E. Aerospace in Daytona Beach where he became the lead metrologist. He retired with thirty years of service in 1994. Herb later worked for Volusia County for eleven years as a technical coordinator/RF Technician on the 800 MHz radio system. His hobbies included traveling and wildlife photography, as well as being a part time photographer for International Speedway Corp. from the early 1980s through 2006.

Herb is survived by his wife, Gail Challis, of 25 years. He is also survived by his sons, Chris Challis, Stephen Paiz, and Christopher Paiz, and seven grandchildren: Elijah and Zane Challis, Rhiley Byrne and Raelyn Paiz, and Matthew Reveles, Corrina Paiz and Cruz Paiz. A memorial service will be held at Holly Hill Church of Christ, 1725 Ridgewood Ave., Holly Hill, FL on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.
