Subject: Some reflections on the 45th
- we
didn't choose one another, we were thrown together merely by
virtue of where we lived
-
our attendance at WPHS was an accident of fate. We went to the
school in our school district.
-
we were educated as well as it was possible to be educated in
those days, blind good fortune for us
-
most of us have gone on to make significant contributions to
society with our time, our talent, and our treasure, in large
part because of our high school days
-
we have paid and continue to "pay forward" the investment
the community made in us
-
a defining moment for our class was the spontaneous applause
when Mark Loeb, in his comments at our Convocation, said:
"Religion is meant to be a positive force, to bring us
to a closer awareness of God, to inspire us to live in proper
relationship to each other, to help assign meaningful value
to the things that matter. It is also the most personal relationship
we will ever have with ourselves as we seek to find the path
of life that gives us a sense of ultimate meaning. But it is
just this sense of personal meaning that is what makes religious
life so dangerous, because it sometimes leads us to transfer
our own personal certainty as an agenda for all others. A truly
religious person can never lost the yearning for humility, because
if we assume that our own intellectual and spiritual conclusions
are the only true ones and that everyone, no matter who they
are and what they believe, must agree with them, then we have
betrayed God by our arrogance and our insistence that what speaks
to our soul is an absolute necessity for the entire human family.
This kind of certainty has afflicted our nation and robbed us
of the kind of mutual respect and friendship that many of us
experienced in this school 45 years ago."
- the
visual images of the weekend in my mind's eye are of people
merely wanting to BE in each other's force fields
- during
the entire weekend I felt love, acceptance, tolerance, generosity,
affirmation, appreciation, charity, kindness & the BEST
aspects of our humanity
- it
was, in short, as I said earlier,
SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOTIOUS!!!!

Dear Anne, I want to thank
you and all of the committee for putting on such a great reunion!
I thought it was great!! I really did not get to talk with all of
those I had wanted to, (especially Sara Moores, who was a friend
in high school..had not see her since.... She had written me an
e-mail prior to the reunion saying she wanted to see me, but we
got to say a few words after the lunch on Sunday, when she signed
her book that I purchased, and that was it.....Guess we will have
to do e-mail....) I felt the whole event was wonderful, and all
of your (the whole committee) hard work paid off in a very memorable
way.....Thanks so much for all you did. Mark and Sarah's speeches
were so very profound......I am so happy that you put their words
on our site.....Bye for now, Nancy |

Hello madam!
Well, with 29,000 visitors to your web site,
I guess you have heard this before. But what a spellbinding work
of art you have created - much work behind it. I feel almost as
if I know you, listening to all the songs from the old days. Made
me wish I were an alumni from your school class of 1961. We received
a funny and sad poem written by and for seniors accompanied by music
that led back to your site. The person who sent it vacations in
Florida during winter. No doubt there are only a couple of degrees
of separation from her to you. We are in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada)
and no doubt your Holland America cruise has made its way here at
one time or other. Thanks for the memories.

The website is so wonderful since I last cruised
about the pages. Congratulations.
It gives me great comfort to see everyone past
and present and to read the stories of our lives. We are all so
awesome in our own individual way.
What
strikes me is how innocent we were then. I remember with awe when
class was let out in the middle of the day to look in the sky as
the space ship took off from Cape Canaveral. We were watching history
in the making! How exciting!
I look forward to attending the 45th anniversary
next April. Keep us posted!

What a great site!!! Chip Emerson just e-mailed
the address. Just started to browse but believe that the "kid"
on the far right second row of the Eagles Nest Camp pix is Jay Landers.
I know he was there with us that summer. Just got together with him and

tho we were class of '60).

I can't imagine that you remember me, but
I took "P.A.D" from you in 1960 or 61. I looked forward to it
for a year and when I took it, I enjoyed it. I think we ran into each
other in a graduate program at Rollins years later. Anyway, it was the
most memorable class I took at WPHS, set my interest in govt. I now work
for the legislature here in Kentucky. I had a career in education in New
Orleans and in Kentucky and have had occasion to speak of you to people
as an example of a (model of a) really good teacher.
I "Googled" you and found an
article where you discussed your bull "Big Sid". It brought
back memories of the Kissimmee rodeo and and advertisement in which the
announcer said leeringly, "Can you ride Big Sid?"
Hope you are well. Thanks for the inspiration.

Wow! Am I proud of you! Thanks for remembering
your old PAD teacher --- you made my day. I have lived in Volusia
County now for the past 20 years, retiring from teaching in 1983, and
moved up on the St. Johns River and became a cattle man of sorts.
You and so many others are a wonderful
example of what I often say to teachers who complain about the abilities
of their students: don't be surprised when that student comes back as
a representative of the Department of Education to evaluate you, or as
the College President or Congressman.
Thank you, again, for remembering. Your
success in life is the reason I taught for 32 years.

Hello everyone! Stephy said she was not working right now but is planning
on going back to work sometime. She said I would not hear from her for
several weeks because she was getting ready to put things in storage move
out of her existing mobile home, remove it from the property and put in
a new one on the same property. I took notice of others calling and not
getting responses from Stephy so I hope this several week thing she mentioned
is only temporary.
She did mention the reunions. She forgot
that I did not graduate from Winter Park, but she also said her memory
of that time was pretty bad because of the family tragedy.
We talked about 10 minutes. She does not
have a computer, so I will write to her and catch her up on my life since
we were 12 years old when I spent a wonderful summer on the island of
Inagua in the Bahamas, with her family. We flew from Miami to Nassau,
then we had to take a real banana boat to Inagua. There were only 50 white
people on the whole island. I told her I still had the pictures from that
trip. Her dad worked for Morton Salt at that time, (on Inagua ) and Stephy
lived with her gandmother during the school year and went home for the
summers.
I want to thank you all for your help.
I was sitting at my computer today sending emails asking for more information
and I no sooner sent the emails when the new info appeared. The web site
is fantastic.

While looking up some information on Google
a few days ago, I found your fantastic website. What a wonderful surprise,
and what great memories you preserved for those of us fortunate enough

You may not remember me, but I was a member

to be one of the most influential people in my life, so it was nice to
see his picture in the old photographs section.
I did not attend Winter Park High, but
went on to Edgewater (and later FSU). Will always remember playing on
that first football team at Glenridge and Dewey Ramsby, Jack Billingham,
Johnny Cash, etc.
Atlanta was my home for a number of years,

Hi! What a great page!
I have saved that URL so I can go back and look at it again.
I'm in the process of requesting Then &
Now pictures from my fellow Alums in Tottenville H.S. (Staten Island)
New York City, class of 1957. As I get Now pictures, I'm matching them
to their yearbook pictures, just as you have done. I hadn't occurred to

When I get enough material to make a meaningful page I'll link it to our

Connie Shoup Hudson, Mary Carter Laval and
I met in Atlanta Saturday afternoon at the home of Mary's daughter. Mary
had come up from Boca Raton for her granddaughter's birthday, so we decided
to meet and catch up. Connie and Mary hadn't seen each other in 40 years.
(Connie wore Mary's wedding gown when she got married. She brought the
portrait along for us all to see.) I had seen Mary at the 40th class reunion.
We
shared pictures of the kids and grandkids over sodas, and caught up on
many years of life. It was great! Then we went to the Horseradish Grill,
a unique dining experience. We "dined" for over 2 hours, then
went back to the house. I brought my entire line of custom designed jewelry
that I make (semi-precious and one of a kind), and we all enjoyed making
selections.
Isn't
it amazing that friends can pick up where you left off 40 years ago, and
comfortably catch up! Amazing.
Connie
had our waiter take pictures of all three of us. Hopefully, she'll download
them to you soon.
This
website has been wonderful for reconnecting! I love it.

I
had a teacher named Donna Newberry, I believe she taught sewing/home
ec. I went to Winter Park Elementary in 1959, then to Glenridge,
then to Winter Park H.S. on Huntington and graduated in 1967.
Loved your photos of Glenridge and had a ball viewing your classmates.
Imagine looking up pics of Glenridge before it goes down and seeing
old photos of the inside and classrooms and memories of yours that are
memories of mine from years ago. Orange groves before
Windsong are amazing. Drove my son in front of my
old middle school today and he had coached basketball through YMCA 4
years ago. Took us both back at the same place but different times.
Wish I could see down the hallways one
more time before Glenridge goes down. But with the tractor
trailers sitting in the parking lot, I guess that's about over with.
I remember learning archery in the field. Sure did snap my arm
a lot. Didn't like our gym clothes though with red or green shorts
and white blouses. Sure did love those walkways between
classes and our windows with no air conditioning. Loved seeing
a picture of your Kilt. Looks like there are lots of us
old KIDS still out here.
I will see if I can find some old pictures
of my Lions Tale and see if those pics are something that you all remember.

One thing that I remember well is the girl's
PE suits....They were red shorts & green snap front shirts....We did
not have the safety guards & shoes of today, so I had many cracked
toes from soccer...Never dreamed it would effect our feet today....We
didn't care....We were young and full of energy and the world was ours
to conquer...Our new Glenridge was so beautiful with actual cement and
halls to walk on instead of the sandy treks of Signal Hill from class
to class.... I wonder how many remember the Skater's Waltz we performed
on the football field during half time...My partner was Calvin Seadeek...Our
picture even made the newspaper...

Hi Anne: What a success it was. Thanks
to Bill Ronay and his sweet wife, those who attended the mini reunion
Saturday at the Blue Willow in Social Circle, had a wonderful time. Saw
my old buddy, Connie Shoupe (Hudson) for the first time in many years.
We have pledged to renew the old friendship
since we found out that we only live 45 minutes away from each other.
The whole afternoon turned out to be richly rewarding. None of us wanted
to leave.
Got to see Lynne Ricks (Peters) and her
husband before they move to Houston in 3 weeks. Jeannie Jones (Russell)
came down from North Carolina. What an inspiration she is! Mary Sheldon,
Ron Peacock, Deanna Dudley (Kent), Larry Fennelly, Susan Carter (Ricks),
Dick Bergen, Polly Gouck (Hall), and Bill Ronay.
The Southern style food was wonderful,
but the super fellowship started an hour in advance on the front porch
in the rocking chairs of the old ante-bellum Blue Willow Inn. We only
had the room rented for 1-1/2 hours but we didn't leave the room for at
least 3 hours.
We adjourned for photos on the lawn in front
of the fountain. We all were reluctant to leave at all. With many hugs
(and maybe a tear or two) and promises to stay in touch, we left to once
again go our sepearate ways.
We have decided to get together again in
either February or March, 2004. Hopefully, a few more folks with participate
then. We can't wait for 10 year intervals for these get-togethers. We
don't have that many left! Thanks for all you do on this website. Jeanne

Each other!!! Most of us had been lost from each other; you provided the
best possible way for us to find each other and fill in the blanks of
all our lives. We owe you a great debt of gratitude. I know, I know --
we probably would have had a website, but there's no way it could have
been as fantastic as the one you have lovingly made for us. We thank you.

Hi - just a note to tell you that Mary
Jane Ezzard and I got together for the first time since 1964 or so. She
lives in Houston and I live in St Petersburg. She was in Winter Park on
a visit and drove over with her husband. When I opened my door and saw
her, I knew that I would have known her eyes anywhere! We had lunch and
caught up. What a great time. Thank you for your assistance in this reunion.

I'm so appreciative of the time and talent
that you and others have put into the web site for the Class of '61. Since
I haven't had any family in central FL for years, I seldom get down there,
and I've never managed to make it to a reunion. (I'm hoping to get there
for the next one!) Tho' I spent only 2 years at WPHS and have seldom even
been back in the area since 1961, those were good years, and I met some
wonderful people!
I've really enjoyed the website and have
spoken with several classmates, exchanged email with several, and my husband
and I (in North Carolina) even managed to get together with Greg Holland
and his wife (who live in California) when he was in the area visiting
his daughter. Also, John Bordley managed to get an address for Mrs. Blickman,
and I wrote her a letter. (Since I spent much of my professional life
teaching English in every grade from 7th through college seniors, I thought
she ought to know that in all those years there were many times that I
called on something she had taught us!) Within days, she called me, and
we talked for quite a long time. Some things never change: she concluded
the conversation by listing several books she thought I should read!
All of this is just to say THANKS for all
your work! This website is exceptional! Before I moved to WP, I spent
2 years at Coral Gables High School--a MUCH larger school. I think there
were over 3,000 students there when I was there. They don't even have
a website!
Thanks not only for your time, but also
for the technical expertise and creativity you've invested in this project!

Hello I was surfing through Florida High
School Alumni & found your class of 1961 Christmas greeting. I went
along with you on your drive. Thank you for the memories. We lived at
2832 Cady Way Winter Park Pines for 16 years until the end of 1981.
Sadly we moved away. In all this snow up here I felt like going back
& I think I have through your wonderful tour. (Our daughter Cynthia
graduated from Winter Park high in 1980) Do you know of anyone from
that year? We have another daughter , that still lives near there &
a niece & my sister, in Orlando - none of whom would search out
any old school friends. So thank you again & stay happy & warm
in the sun. From an old friend of Winter Park - now in Pennsylvania.

Hi, Dutchess-Congrats on your first year!
I find it amazing that the Class of '61 has come back into my life after
40 years absence. Now it is recurring facet of existence... thanks to
you Mary & Bill! I certainly do appreciate all the infos forwarded
to me by you and Mary even if I don't always have time to respond. Time
remains my greatest obstacle.
I thought your Newsletter page was particularly
well done... the montage of classmate photos hit the bullseye design wise.
You know I open these things up and fly thru them pretty fast but your
graphics slowed me down. I noticed the "then" and "now"
photos and thot it a nice touch. Then I observed that some classmates
were only "then" pics and I realized they had no "now"
because they were deceased. I must admit to tearing up when I viewed Barbara
Cayll and Sue Sturges... superimposed with blended edges giving their
images an almost spectral appearance... a beautiful tribute, Anne. Well
done!
Thanks for all you good work!!!! Bill |
