In Summary:

Most of us are turning 64 years old this year. Some have become grandparents while others became 'great'-grand parents. Classmates have reconnected for the first time since 1961. Dale Potter & his wife started out on a 3-month cross-country trip to celebrate retirement. They drove through central Florida & visited with Lynn Nidy and Bill Schwartz. Bill provided us with a few photographs of that reunion. Dave Rees found Mary Matthews on the Auburn University Campus & provided us with our first glimps of Mary in over 40 years. The 'lunch-bunch' in the Georgia area continue to meet up.
Chip & Judy Schram lost their house in February 11th to a house fire. All of their possessions were lost. They are working on their plans to rebuild. Fishing buddies & a few football enthusiasts are sharing photos of their get-togethers and a few classmates sent in pictures of vacations and celebrations.
Illnesses have caught a few of us off guard. Stevie Spaulding & Dewey Ramsby are currently undergoing treatments for cancer. Stevie was diagnosed with bile duct cancer and Dewey is undergoing treatment for Smoldering Multiple Myeloma (cancer of the blood). There have been a few knee reconstructions and Julie Baldwin underwent a complete hip replacement... some of us have parts that just seem to need more attention now then they have in earlier years. Maybe we should have taken better care of ourselves... but then, we might not have had as much fun back then.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN!

The mention of the creation of an alumni website occurred at the 40th class reunion, June, 2001. The site was created and online by July 1st.

Since then the "Class of 1961 Website" has been providing e-connections with those from our graduating class and beyond. Memorabilia has been sent in for editing and posting to the website. As news of events are whispered, you will find coverage on your website.

Since the site went online, more than 41,500 visitors have come to the alumni website through the homepage and twice that number have entered via the 'updates' page.

Classmates we have located or relocated, along with all those we have e-mail addresses for, will receive an e-mail with a link to the 6th anniversary newsletter.

Those we do not e-connect with will receive, via USPS, their own copy of the 6th annual WPHS Class of 1961 Alumni website newsletter with a brief narrative of the news of this past years.

Classmate participation is key to the success of the alumni website. A special thanks goes out to Kay Dirst, Richard Winslow, Lynn Nidy & wife Sue, Bill Schwartz & wife Rebekah, Dave Rees & wife Katherine, Bill Ronay & wife Camille, Loni Abbotts, Tom Tobin, Bob Cross, Jack & Jolene Billingham, Chip & Judy Schram, Richard Giannini, Marcia Gruber, Wayne & Bonnie (Boone) Moore, George Fisher, Charlie Cayll, Mary Phillips, Vic Vermillion and others, for the photographs and stories they have sent in for publication to the website this past year.

The Class of 1958 is celebrating their 50th class reunion April, 2008. Mary Phillips worked online with Claudia Janke, Pattsy Buchanan & Bill Cross to help locate unaccounted for classmates. Anne Laing is working with their committee in support of their reunion website.

We welcome your recent as well as classic photographs, newspaper clippings and published items for display on the alumni website.. Let's keep up the momentum!

Please remember to contact Bill Ronay or Mary Phillips if you change e-mail or postal addresses.
WE HAVE LOST A CLASSMATE
We said goodbye to Suzanne McMillan who died suddenly September 26, 2006 as a result of injuries she sustained in a traffic accident in Sedona, Arizona. Suzanne attended the 45th class reunion - her first and only class reunion and she had such a wonderful time renewing old friendships, dancing in her poodle skirt with all her old friends while laughing, singing, remembering and, yes, even a few tears were shed. Suzanne reconnected with several old friends and they walked down memory lane together. She will be missed by all... You can read a little about Suzanne on our website by clicking HERE.
ANOTHER YEAR HAS COME.....AND GONE

Bill Schwartz and his wife Rebekah along with Lynn and Sue Nidy made the trip from Lynn's summer home in Alabama to the campus of Suwannee-The University of the South where Richard Winslow currently works. Richard took everyone on a tour of the campus and area surrounding.
In the very words of Bill Schwartz you can click HERE and see Bill's summary of the visit with Richard. Not only will you see Richard sticking his finger in Rebekah's ear (according to Bill, Sue Nidy did absolutely nothing to stop Richard), but you will also see what Bill remembers as Richard's house and there is even a photograph of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse - and more as only our beloved classmate Bill Black can describe!

Grandbabies are arriving and even some 'great'grandbabies. Is that possible? You betcha. There are still some of us who are becoming grandparents for the very first time. Loni Abbotts introduced to us her very first grandbaby - Miss Mikenzie Laine - back in August, 2006. If you have photographs that were taken with you holding your grandbaby, send them in and we will post them to our alumni website. Thanks for sharing, Loni! (We also have a photograph of Dave Rees with his new granddaughter, Isabella!)

Many of us have been able to retire. Some who have retired have actually taken on a different profession. Tom Tobin shared with us his 2nd profession which he really loves and keeps him in shape along with his running. Tom is a professional baseball umpire. Tom's picture appeared on the cover of a widely published magazine, "Baseball, The Magazine". Tom says it's a great second career and a great source of income, as well.

Fishing is still one of the favored sports of classmates. And let's not forget 'contact' sports. Chip & Judy Schram follow the Hokies around the country and sometimes meet up with classmates while enjoying the sport of football. Classmates Chip Schram and George Fisher received prestigious awards.

Mary Phillips and Bill Ronay have been looking for classmates for the last 5 years. Well, Mary Matthews was found and ironically she was living in Auburn, Alabama and working at Auburn University, not very far from Dave Rees. So one day when Dave and his staff were visiting the Auburn University campus where Mary works, he stopped by the university bookstore and introduced himself. Both Dave and Mary were children of military fathers so they had a lot in common growing up.

Bill and Camille Ronay hosted two more mini-reunion luncheons at the Blue Willow Inn August 19th and again in March 31st. Bill and Camille have a lovely home outside of Atlanta. Back in 2003, after looking over the addresses of our accounted for and newly accounted for classmates, determined that perhaps a mini-reunion would be fun. So he and Camille came up with the idea of a luncheon for those classmates living in Georgia and surrounding states to be held at the famous country restaurant and inn in Social Circle, Georgia. The first mini-reunion was held August 9th, 2003, and those in attendance thought it would be good to have this event repeated semi-annually. It has been very successful and lots of fun.

Chip and Judy Schram heard their smoke alarms go off just after 6:00 AM on February 11th. Chip found his oil furnace room on fire. This room stood alone just off his front porch. Fire calls were made to 911 by Judy while Chip went into their kitchen to get the fire extinguisher. He fought the fire until the extinguisher was empty. Judy got her 80 year old mother out of the house along with one of their three cats and with their dog. The entire e-mail can be read by clicking HERE. Chip adds a few thoughts to the e-mail on how we might protect ourselves from a similar disaster.

Vic Vermillion is home from the middle east and makes a point of getting together with a few friends; Marcia Gruber shared a 64th birthday photo of classmates celebrating; Dale Potter and wife Michelle visit Bill Schwartz & Lynn Nidy for the first time in 45 years.

Body parts wearing out or osteoarthritis setting in - either way it generally means we need to have some parts replaced. Julie Baldwin shared with us via husband Bill, what she had to go through to have another hip replacement. Julie currently is in a brace and will have extensive physical therapy that will follow. Illnesses have caught up to a few of us. Stevie Spaulding was diagnosed with a rare gall bladder cancer this past April and Dewey Ramsby was diagnosed with smoldering multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood, last July. When Stevie discovered she had some real medical issues that needed to be addressed, she was in the UK. You can read e-mail from Stevie where she summed up her diagnoses and treatment for us. Click HERE. Dewey is currently undergoing treatment at the Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa. His wife, Trish, has set up a 'CarePage' on the Moffitt Center website where she updates family and friends of Dewey's progress. On that same site you can post a message to Dewey and Trish. Click on 'CarePage' and click on the 'visit a CarePage' option. There you type in the name Dewey Ramsby and you will be taken to Dewey's carepage where you can not only read the updates posted by Trish, but you can also read the messages Dewey has received from his family members and many friends. You can leave Dewey a message, as well.
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
The success of this website is measured in several different ways. GREAT STORIES of reuniting with friends from years back is one of our favorite 'success' rewards. But additionally, we were very proud to be a part of the 45th class reunion. That was the initial motivation for creating your WPHS Class of 1961 Alumni website.

Share with us your stories of how you connected with a classmate via this website. We want to hear from you. You can click HERE to read a bit about how the site has affected classmates.
We are looking for more pictures. Pictures and newspaper articles if you have any. Your web'mistress will be delighted to post the pictures to the website along with your name for contributing. The pictures and their captions have made the website the success that it is.
Don't forget, if you change your e-mail address you should contact Mary Phillips or Bill Ronay so they can update their records to ensure you receive the most recent e-mails from your classmates.
This website does not update itself. We have tracked down a few classmates who forgot to contact us when e-mail addresses were changed. Help us eliminate broken links and undeliverable e-mails. Remember to contact us of any snail-mail or e-mail changes. Many thanks.
