in Baltimore, Maryland to Dr. and Mrs. James Edward Chace, he
was raised in Ocala, FL. He attended the University of Florida
where he was a Chi Phi, sang in the Glee Club and played varsity
tennis. He graduated from Northwestern University Dental School
in 1938, and returned to Ocala to practice general dentistry
with his father. In 1939, he married Frances Lowe, creating
a lovely, happy union, lasting 65 years until her death in 2004.
Enlisting as a dental officer in the Army Air Corps in 1941,
he served for four years, attaining the rank of Major, eventually
heading the Periodontal Dental Department at Drew Field in Tampa.
Moving to Orlando in 1945, Dr. Chace started the first dental
practice limited to the treatment of periodontal disease in
Florida. He served organized dentistry as Editor of the Florida
Dental Journal from 1949-1953, as a member of the State Board
of Dental Examiners from 1953-1957, which he chaired, as President
of the Southern Academy of Periodontology in 1958, later inducted
as a Fellow, and as first President of the Florida Society of
Periodontists in 1960. In 1963, he was the third generation
of his family elected as president of the Florida Dental Association,
after his grandfather James Chace, who in 1884 served as its
first president, and his father, who served in 1904. His son,
Richard Chace, Jr., and grandson, Richard Chace Caven both became
dentists, making five generations of Florida dentists, a first
in the United States. He was a member of the original planning
committee for the University of Florida, School of Dentistry
and for many years served as a clinical professor. Nationally,
he was a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, was a Director
of the American Board of Periodontology, and 1995 was awarded

field of Periodontists. The author of over twenty scientific
articles, he lectured widely both here and abroad. Dr. Chace

Board of the Orlando Symphony Orchestra and for 56 years attended

Park. He belonged to the Country Club of Orlando and the University
Club of Winter Park. All of his life Dick enjoyed fishing, photography
and especially the game of tennis. He loved music, often playing
the piano, and sang in the chorus at the Bach Festival Society
of Winter Park. Graced with a remarkable mind, which well served
his professional and intellectual activities, he could talk
about the latest book, great philosophical ideas or discuss
the game on Saturday. An avid historian and scholar, he had
a special passion for the American Civil War and the Napoleonic
era. His unique breadth and depth of interests, remarkable memory
and sharp sense of humor made him a delightful and fascinating
companion. Always a gentleman, Dick was kind and thoughtful
to all, and will be greatly missed by those who knew him. He

| BARKSDALE,
EDNA H., died peacefully on Oct. 17, 2009, surrounded
by her family. She was 91 years old. The cause of death was
complications from pneumonia. Edna Laughton Howell was born
Aug. 1, 1918, in East Orange, NJ to Harry Aaron and Bertha Jones
Howell. She graduated from the College of William and Mary in
1939 with majors in math and history. Active in campus life,
she captained the debate team (never losing a debate) and served
as president of her dorm and her sorority. While at William
and Mary, Frances Barksdale introduced her engaging college
roommate (Edna) to her handsome pilot brother Lt. William Sydnor
Barksdale, Jr. Edna and Bill were married May 11, 1940. Together
they had four children, Virginia Laughton and William
Sydnor III, born in Long Beach, CA, Evelyn Lovelace
in Washington, DC, and John Howell in Dayton, OH. Edna maintained
the family spirit of adventure during the course of her husband's
30 year military career. While her husband served in India during
WWII, Edna lived with her parents and first two children in
New Jersey. Venturing out on their own from bases in Germany
and France, Edna and Bill often packed up the family to travel.
From a fishing village in Portugal to the salt mines of Germany;
from a Mediterranean cruise to a camel yard in Libya, Edna and
Bill embraced the opportunity to travel and explore. The family
moved to Winter Park, FL in 1958 upon Col. Barksdale's assignment
to Orlando AFB, where Edna and Bill lived among dear friends
until her husband's death in 1999. A natural leader, Edna was
active in Girl Scouts for 20 years both overseas and here in
the states. She served as North Atlantic Girl Scout Commissioner
on the international level, as well as being a troop leader
for her daughters and president of the Orange County Girl Scout
Council. She served several stints as president of the Officer's
Wives Club, entertaining and hosting events with enjoyment and
ease. Edna was an accomplished seamstress with a sense of design,
making clothing for her entire family. From 2001 until her death,
Edna lived with her children, first in Vermont and then in Washington
State. Edna is greatly missed by her four children; fourteen
grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. |
 LARSON,
LUBON BRIDGES, died Oct. 7 after a valiant fight with
Alzheimers. She was born Sept. 16, 1925 in West Plains, MO,
to Earl (Derb) and Sadie McCallon. She attended Drury College
in Springfield, MO, where she became a member of the Delta Delta
Delta sorority. It was at Drury that she met her future husband
and father of her children, Ken Bridges. LuBon became an English
teacher and although she taught at several schools, her
name became synonymous with Glenridge
Junior High in Winter Park, FL. For more than 30 years,
she made ninth grade English a joy, even if that did include
grammar and classical literature. She taught generations of
families and it was the rare outing to a restaurant or store
where some did not yell out, "Hi Mrs. Bridges!" Well,
Mrs. Bridges could not always remember the name of her student
but she could tell you where they sat! While teaching she found
time to get her Masters Degree at Stetson University in literature.
Lubon enjoyed life. She loved her family, her friends, bridge
and she especially loved to be on stage, whether in the classroom,
in a fashion show or at the talent presentations at Rio Pinar
Country Club. She was truly a kick in the pants!!! She was preceded

Ken Bridges; long-time companion Desi Serrabella; and husband
Les Larson; she leaves to cherish her memory her brother Earl
McCallon; son Gary Bridges (Linda); daughter Pat (Sissy) Mignacca

A private ceremony will be held in the future when she is reunited
with her parents. In lieu of flowers, donations or memorials
the family asks that you celebrate her life the way she would
have wanted... at a fine restaurant, dressed to the nines and
your glass raised for a toast! |

LOEB,
MARK GORDON, Rabbi Emeritus, 65, died Wednesday,
October 7th, while serving in Milan, Italy. He served as a
senior rabbi at Beth El Congregation from 1976 until May 2008.
A Boston native, he served on the board of many organizations
in the local Jewish community and was chairman of the Board
of Baltimore Hebrew University. Beth El released a statement
Thursday that said: "It is with a profound sense of loss
and sadness that we share with you the following news. Our
Rabbi Emeritus, Rabbi Mark Loeb, died Wednesday night in Milan,
Italy. He was there serving a congregation as its interim
rabbi enjoying Milan's culture, opera, and the many other
things that he loved. We mourn his loss as a congregation
and a community, and offer our sincerest sympathies to his
family." Sen. Barbara Mikulski called Loeb a man of "warmth
and wit." "He had a great sense of humor. He loved
everything from opera to wrestling -– which may explain
his love of politics," she said. "He was a champion
of social justice -– and loved to wade into the thorniest
situations." Never married, Loeb leaves two sisters,
Carol Francis of Orlando, Fla., and Judy Kaplan of Lake Worth,
Fla., and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Officials at Beth El were expecting a funeral next week, after

| RICE, CHARLES
E., 73, died as a result of an accident in his swimming
pool. Charles E. Rice, who ran Jacksonville-based Barnett Banks
Inc. for two decades as it grew into Florida's largest bank,
died Monday at his home in Boca Grande. During his tenure as
chief executive officer from 1979 to 1998, when it was acquired
by NationsBank (now Bank of America), Barnett grew from about
$3 billion in assets to $43 billion in assets. "Charlie
presided over a major expansion of Barnett, which obviously
worked out well," said former Federal Reserve Board Vice
Chairman Frederick Schultz, who sat on Barnett's board of directors
with Mr. Rice. "He created huge value for the shareholders
of Barnett," said banking analyst Ben Bishop of Allen C.
Ewing & Co. His impact on local banking went beyond Barnett.
First Guaranty Bank Chairman Julian "Hickory" Fant
said he considered Mr. Rice a mentor. "Charlie was always
gracious to me. Anytime I was around him, I listened very closely,"
Fant said. Bishop said Mr. Rice's predecessor as CEO, Guy Botts,
had a vision of building Barnett into a major banking institution
in the Southeast. And Botts left it to Mr. Rice to implement
that vision. "It took a disciplinarian to do that and Charlie
was a disciplinarian," Bishop said. Schultz's wife, Nancy,
a close friend of Mr. Rice's wife, Dianne, said Mr. Rice spent
all his time either at the bank or with his family. "Charlie
was hard-working and absolutely devoted to his family,"
she said. "That's the No. 1 thing I think of when I think
about him." Mr. Rice moved to Boca Grande after Barnett
was acquired and had been spending his time fishing and playing
tennis. But he also was involved in operating a Jacksonville
investment company called Mayport Venture Partners with his
son, Dan. "He was a wonderful person and a great father
and he'll be missed by everyone," Dan Rice said. Mr. Rice
was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., but spent much of his life in
Florida. He received a bachelor's degree from the University
of Miami and a master's in business administration from Rollins
College in Winter Park. He first joined Barnett at its Winter
Park bank in 1965 and became president of that bank in 1967.
He moved to Jacksonville in 1972, when he became executive vice
president of the Barnett Banks Inc. holding company. He became
president of the holding company a year later (he gave up that
title in 1988), CEO in 1979 and chairman in 1984. He also served
on the board of directors of several other companies, including
CSX Corp. and Sprint Corp. Mr. Rice was a member and former
chairman of the Florida Council of 100 and a past chairman of
the Board of Trustees at Rollins. He received the Champion of
Higher Independent Education in Florida award from the Presidents
of Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida for his
lifetime of service to higher independent education. Mr. Rice
is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dianne; children Dan, Celeste
Donovan and Michelle Mitchell; sisters Charlyne Bragg and Barbara
Wright; and seven grandchildren. The family will receive friends
from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in
Jacksonville, with the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday. Interment
will be at Oaklawn Cemetery. The family requests donations to
Guardian Catholic Schools, Rollins College, or the St. Vincent's
Foundation. (Jacksonville Times-Union - 12/11/2008) |

| BIRKENMEYER,
CLARE CURRIE MARTIN, 62, began her life on December
11, 1943 in Bradenton, Fla. She grew up in Winter Park and
graduated from Winter Park High School. After marrying, she
lived in Africa for six years, where her two daughters were
born. This was a journey she deeply treasured. She then moved
to Fargo, ND where she earned her Bachelor's Degree from NDSU.
There, she was an active member of the community by serving
as President of the United Way and also participated in the
Meals on Wheels program. In 1988, Clare moved back to Florida,
establishing herself in the Daytona Beach area. Here she served
as Benefits Director of DBCC, then as Director of member Acquisitions
for Florida Health Care Plans. She was closely involved with
the Port Orange/South Daytona Chamber of Commerce and the
Volusia Manufacturer's Association. She is survived by daughters
Michelle Birkenmeyer of Port Orange and Lisa Birkenmeyer Horn
of Clermont; grandson, Tyler Horn; and sister, Anne Stone,
of Ormond Beach. Clare was a mentor to many and a loyal friend.
She always had a smile on her face, and above all, she was
a fiercely devoted, loving mother. Though Clare may no longer
be with us, the warmth and joy she bestowed will be cherished
always. Everyone whose heart has been touched by Clare is
invited to attend a celebration of her life. The remembrance
will be held at 3:00 p.m. on February 10th, 2007 at the top
of The Caribbean, 2425 South Atlantic Ave, Daytona Beach Shores,
FL 32118. In lieu of flowers, donations in Clare's name can
be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler.
